Bull Run Run from Above

Thanks to the U.S. Geological Survey and the Microsoft TerraServer, you can see the Bull Run Run course from above. These pictures are quite interesting. If you want to browse the TerraServer yourself, go there, click on "find a spot on the earth" and put "Clifton, VA, USA" in a search pattern and you should be in the neighborhood. It's easiest to browse with a good map handy. You can get closer in shots than these, but they get too close and it's hard to know where you are.

These photos are all about 50 KB in size. They won't take forever to download, but it won't be quick either. Warning! All descriptions below are just my belief of what is there. I could be totally wrong! If so, let me know.

This page relates to the course that will be used in 2005. The course used in 2003 and 2004 did not go upstream from Centerville Road.

Upstream end of course: This shows from the top (northwest end) of the course to the soccer fields. The big straight line through the image is the power line. You can see the scoccer fields in the bottom center, and Popes Head Creek but you can't see Hemlock too well. The town of Manassas is on the left side of the photo. Bull Run is quite obvious in this picture.
Downstream end of course: This is the course from Bull Run Marina (you can just see the bridge in the top-right corner of the image) to the Do Loop. The body of water going north at the right side of the photo marks the downstream end of the course.
Top of course: You can see where Centerville Road crosses Bull Run, Cub Run, the powerline crossing, and the area of the turnaround (near the horseshoe by the bright, white patch). Town of Manassass is at bottom of picture.
Hemlock Overlook (Start/Finish) Area: I know that Hemlock Overlook is in the top portion of this picture, but I can't find it. You can see Popes Head Creek, the railroad, and the soccer fields to the bottom. Anyone want to help me out here?
Soccer Fields: The soccer fields and the bay around them are in the middle of this picture. The Marina and the bridge across the river are to the bottom.
The Marina to Wolf Run Shoals Road: This shows from the Marina to Wolf Run Shoals Road. The bridge by the Marina is visible at the top left corner. Wolf Run Shoals Road is along the long, white open space to the right of the picture. You can see the small circular clearing where the aid station is and the clearing where the house at the end of the road is. The powerline is just to the right of all of that.
Fountainhead: Fountainhead is on the right where the white upside-down "L" is.
The Do Loop: This is a great shot of the Do Loop. Fountainhead is at the top-left of the picture. You can see the road into the Do Loop, but I think the prominent open space is not where the aid station is. Sandy Run Regional Park and its boathouse are visible to the right.
