Preliminary results for the Pumpkin Spice 50k, held on Saturday October 17, in the Year of our Covid 2020. It was an amazing day in Prince William Forest Park, with perfect fall weather conditions. The race started with temps in the mid thirties to low forties, and under sunny skies it rose into the low sixties by the afternoon. There was a nice turnout of over 40 participants. Thanks to everybody for being respectful and following precautions to keep each other safe. It was great to see runners with numbers on the trails again!

Big thanks to Race Director Sarah Curtis (and her wonderful co-RD, Rye the Wonder Pup) for putting on this fun event, and in particular for putting it together in just over three weeks. The event was conceived as a "Covid-safe" replacement concept to fit into the October calendar instead of the traditional PB&J 50k. Thanks also to the VHTRC for its sponsorship of this first race held under the club's banner since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.

The race was won by Dirk Schulze, with a sparkling time of 4:14! The Pumpkin Spice 50k women's champ was Stephanie Hill, who also placed fifth overall, with a time of 4:53. Six runners in total were able to break five hours on this fast, and admittedly a tad short course. A consensus developed over the afternoon that the actual distance may have been closer to 30 miles rather than the full 31+ miles measured during the initial course selection.

Full results will be posted on the Pumpkin Spice race site soon. Shoot Q a note if there are errors in the tabulations below.

Important notes:
! - Michael had a most extraordinary day. He "dropped" after at least three of his loops, but for one reason or another found
himself coaxed into doing "just one more loop" enough times that he somehow managed to finish the full 50k! A huge thanks to him
for his fifth loop in particular, since he accompanied the sweep (and sole race volunteer) Jessica Carroll, and assisted her in
clearing the course of its overabundant markings.

* - Liliana asked for and received an "early start" option to allow her to run the race while fulfilling a volunteer obligation
at another race in the late afternoon. Her pre-dawn start led to her covering a 50k distance, but with four loops of the course
and a first "loop" on park roads in the dark. So she covered the distance but did not officially finish the race due to that
course variance.

** Angela finished four loops, then went back out to cover more miles on the back end of the course to complete a virtual marathon.

+ Rodica arrived late due to a misunderstanding over the starting location, and she has a 10 minute "chip time" reflected above, as she
started the race at 8:10 AM.

& - Huge congrats to Minh and to Cara, as both finished their first ultra marathons at this race! In Cara's case, it was also
her first trail race. Both were presented with links to enter the 2021 Massanutten Mountain Trails 100,
since clearly they are on that path now.
