John Hayward Is Overall Winner; Kendall Hommel Fastest Female

The Andiamo W&OD Trail Run took place on October 9, 2010.  After a pleasantly cool start, it did get rather warm, but overall it was a beautiful day.  All 14 starters finished.

The course was a couple tenths of a mile longer this year because of a detour between Clark’s Gap and Leesburg.  Since the 2-mile detour ran parallel to the trail, only the slight offset affected the mileage, though the detour did have a few hills that are not characteristic of the old railroad bed.  Those locals who are familiar with the controversy over some power lines out that way will be glad to know that the power lines were buried under the trail rather than obliterating the beautiful canopy of trees in that section.

The volunteer crew was outstanding; club members Stan Spence, Paul Blackman, Lou Jones, and Charlie and Betty Miracle staffed three aid stations plus the finish line in Shirlington, enabling the RD to participate in the run herself this year.  In addition, Janet Townshend and John Anderson maintained a self-service aid station (photo above) located near Gallows Road, which allowed the runners to make the final 9.5 mile push to the finish without additional stops at local food stores.  And, from a “thank you” posting to the listserv, I gather that Joe Clapper also provided some refreshment from his bicycle.  Thank you all for volunteering!
