Report and Results from 2010 Races

The Potomac Overlook Trail Runs (4K and 8K) will be held at Potomac Overlook Regional Park, Arlington, VA on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 8:30 a.m. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Hikers are welcome and should be able to hike the 4K (2.5 miles) in less than an hour. The course is asphalt road for about ˝ mile, the remainder over single-track dirt trails. Be prepared for two stream crossings on rocks.

The trail runs are a fund-raiser for two Arlington parks – Potomac Overlook Regional Park and Gulf Branch Nature Center, to help provide financial support in this era of reduced public budgets. Early registration entry fee is $10. All proceeds, except for refreshment expenses, will be donated to the two parks. Race day registration fee is $12. Virginia Happy Trails Running Club is the event sponsor, providing management, equipment and volunteer support.

The Mad BomberOpen and master’s winners will receive Mad Bomber hats. Mad Bomber hats will also be awarded randomly to finishers. Refreshments will be available after finishing.

Potomac Overlook Regional Park is at the end of Marcey Road off Military Road in north Arlington. You can find Military Road from Glebe Road (at the west end near Chain Bridge) or Lorcum Lane coming up Spout Run from the GW Parkway or Lee Highway (at the east end at Lee Highway in Cherrydale). There are traffic signals and park signs at the corner of Military and Marcey and there is only one way to turn at the intersection. Once on Marcey, just keep driving for ½ mile until you find the event.

The Potomac Overlook Nature Center opens at 10 a.m. Nature displays and live forest creatures are featured at the nature center. Parking for the event is at the Donaldson Run Recreation Association parking lot. All cars must be out of the parking lot by 11 a.m.

Gulf Branch Nature Center is a nearby park that was nearly closed in Arlington County’s 2009 budgetary process; however, Friends of Gulf Branch Nature Center (FoGBNC) managed to keep Gulf Branch open. Reduced services were proposed in the 2010 budget. FoGBNC has been organized as a nonprofit and will provide financial and volunteer support during the current fiscal year in order to maintain services at Gulf Branch Nature Center.

Map: Here is a map of the course. Find the start/finish and then follow the numbers around in order. This is the 4 km loop. The 8 km run does this twice. The part marked in blue is asphalt road. The rest of the course, in green, is single track dirt trail. Thanks to the Potomac Overlook Park for use of the map. (Here is the park's unspoiled version.)

Information about the trail runs can be obtained by request from mts2run@verizon.net or by telephone, 703-524-1320.
