Candidate Statement: Dan Aghdam

Dear VHTRC members,

Thank you for taking time to read my introduction. My name is Dan Aghdam and I have been involved with the Ultra Running community and VHTRC since approximately 2007. From my first run with the group, which was at Vicki’s Death March, I noticed something very special about VHTRC. I noticed the way other club members embraced me as a newcomer and helped me “not die” during my first run. From that point forward, it didn’t take me long to get immersed into our wonderful culture and the awesome friendships that have become so important in my life.

As years went by I intentionally scheduled my time to give back, as much as I could, to our community. In addition to volunteering at aid stations for just about every VHTRC event in which I was not participating, I saw a need and volunteered to Direct Catherines FA-50K and have overseen that race for the past three years. I submitted my name to become a member of the club’s Board of Directors and got elected after a vacancy was created on the board due to departure of another member. I do all of this because I want to “pay it forward” and because I would like to preserve our club’s culture and mission.

During my time on the board, I advocated for better communication with our Race Directors, better communications with club members through an annual member’s meeting (which has not happened yet), more VHTRC involvement in various trail work opportunities and creation of our Trail-Work group (managed by John and Stephanie), and a better VHTRC website so members can have improved and easy access to the information they need.

If I am elected to serve on your Board I will continue to work on the above unfinished business. In addition, I will do my best to accomplish the following:

  • Create a way for our club members to have access to more group runs.
  • Improve VHTRC web site and web access for club members.
  • Continue support for our Trail-Work team.
  • Modifications to our VHTRC awards methodology to improve selection of final winners.
  • Improved communication with our RDs and more involvement in decisions that have an impact on their race.
  • Creation of committees for important club needs to allow more members become involved and achieve better outcomes.

 Thanks again!
