Start out the new year with some cold miles at Prince William Forest Park and clear your head of any lingering hangover.  Sign up online for this very low-key run is now open.

Held at Chain O' Lakes Park in Indiana, the HUFF trail run offers a 50k, a 3-person relay and a single loop 10 miler.

The first event in the now-storied history of the club. Very low-key, a lot of fun, and no fee for those who RSVP and then show for the run. Come ring in the holidays with Furbutt and the VHTRC! Be sure to fill out the online RSVP to enter. Entry opens on November 2.

The VHTRC version of this traditional fall running classic. Thanksgiving morning on the C&O Canal and the trails around Great Falls, on the Maryland side. Hosted by Bur.

The oldest and largest U.S. ultramarathon.

Run on the trails of Rosaryville State Park, this race is put on by the Annapolis Striders.

Point-to-point course on the Pinhoti trail in the Talladega National Forest, east of Birmingham in central Alabama.

A challenging, scenic and largely isolated run on the beautiful trails of the Green Ridge State Forest in western Maryland. About 75 percent trails, primarily single-track, and about 25 percent logging road.

Put on by the Charlottesville Area Trail Runners (CATs) and held on single-track mountain bike trails on the campus of the Miller School, just west of Charlottesville in Albemarle County.  The CATHalf was augmented with the Pounding Creek Marathon in 2018, and for 2019 a Trail 10k has been added.

Trail half marathon held on the River Valley Ranch along the Gunpowder River in northern Maryland.

Three-day stage race in the New River gorge in West Virginia. On hiatus in 2019.

Over 7,000 feet of elevation gain in the 50k course; there is a 25k option.

Held in the Cumberland Mountains in SW Virginia. The 100 miler has a 40 hour cutoff. There are accompanying 100 km, 50 km and 25 km races held concurrently. 

A run on the Wild Oak Recreational Trail. Tough and very low key. This is the "Hot TWOT" since it is held during what should be warmer fall weather, but it has often been anything but hot at this time of year on these trails, so be prepared! 

Dirt road and pavement course; previous participants speak highly of its beauty.

The only 100 mile trail race in the state of Indiana, held at the Chain O' Lakes State Park. There are also 100 km and 50 miler options. Moved from the spring to the fall in 2018.

"A triptych of runs on the Eastern Continential Divide" - day one is 50 km, day 2 is 50 miles, and day 3 is a half marathon.  This classic and highly challenging event is in West Virginia's beautiful Monongahela National Forest, with the option to sign up for one race, two races or all three.

The 65 mile course is held in Hyner Run State Park and the Sproul and Tiadaghton State Forests in north central Pennsylvania.  13,400 feet of elevation gain and a 19 hour cut-off for this challenging race.

A challenging 100 miler that is held in the same general location as TWOT, and is the East Coast's Hardrock qualifying race. Grindstone is part of the Beast Series. Note 6 p.m. Friday starting time.

5 laps of 8 miles each along the trails and some roads in the Codorus State Park in south-central Pennsylvania.

Utilizing the Marl Ravine Mountain Bike trail at York River State Park in James City County near Williamsburg. The 8-mile course is on an out and back trail loop. 

Steep climbs and autumnal colors in the Northern Wasatch Range of northern Utah and southern Idaho.

Sunday is the trail running day for the Trail Fest weekend at Patapsco Valley State Park, with a half marathon and a one mile fun run option in addition to the trail marathon on offer.

A majority of the course follows the Arizona Trail and the historic Flagstaff to Grand Canyon Stage Line route that was in use in the late 19th century.  Many of the aid station locations match the stage line's watering holes. Former VHTRC member Ian Torrence directs this event, which includes a 55k and relay option.

No, this is not THAT Barkley.  Instead, this is a (relatively) saner introduction to Frozen Head State Park, the home of the Barkley Marathons. 

A festive run, for women only, held on the southern sections of the beautiful Bull Run Occoquan Trail (including the infamous Do Loop) in Fountainhead Regional Park.

Out-n-back race on a rail trail through Pine Creek Gorge, the "Grand Canyon of the East," in northern Pennsylvania. 100 km option.

Three races at this tough event now: the Moose Mountain Marathon, Superior Trail 50 Mile, and Superior Sawtooth 100 Mile. This is the race formerly known as the Superior Trail 100.

5-mile loops on generally flat trails.

16 mile and 30 mile options as well as the traditional Iron Mountain 50 miler, with staggered start times for each. These races in a beautiful section of southwest Virginia are under the direction of Kevin Townsend.

100km race in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

A challenging 50k course on single-track trail provides scenic views and rock scrambles in the hilly Patapaco River Valley. 25k option. A BBQ after-party (with vegan option) included in the ticket price.

The race that appears to have put an end to any discussion about which 100 miler in the East is the toughest.  Entry opens on December 7 for the 2020 race.

Race series in suburban Maryland.  This 10 km race with 5 km option is held at Little Bennett Regional Park.

Primarily run on the Kanawha Trace trail, and put on by the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners club.  There is are 25 km and 10 km options along with the 50 km.

Part of the Blue Crab Bolt series of races. This 10 km race with a 5 km option is held on the trails at Schaeffer Farms in suburban Maryland.

This race promises lovely views of Lake Tahoe from the low-rent side of the border.  50 miler and 55 km options also available.

One of the oldest 100 mile runs. Beautiful countryside, friendly management, and a runnable course. 100 km option is also available.

The run you love to hate. Tough, rocky trail, great support and post-run activities. Entry opens after June 1 and will fill fairly quickly.  There is also a 25k point-to-point race, with a later start, for veterans age 52 or older.

First in a summer trail running series in suburban Maryland.  This 10 km race with a 5 km option is held on the trails of Seneca Creek State Park.

The first trail 100 miler has a beautiful course, great aid stations, and a field selected by lot rather than merit.

There is a 25 km option.  The 50 km is a two-loop course on a wide, hard-packed trail system located below Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. Registration opens on Jan 1.

A tough, slow, and beautiful run, on a course that is unique for this area. A great weekend for the whole family at Canaan Valley Resort State Park.  Registration opens on January 1.

A race on the Cascade Crest trail at the Mountain Lake resort in Giles County, near Blacksburg (where Dirty Dancing was filmed in the late 1980s).

Traditional trail run in Ohio, there are 50 mile and trail marathon options along with the 100 miler.

Three straight days of trail races in the Chattanooga area, with Day 1 on Raccoon Mountain (18 miles), Day 2 on Lookout Mountain (22 miles) and the final day Signal Mountain (20 miles).

Challenging night run, held on a 25+ mile loop on primarily single track trail in Prince William Forest Park.  There is also a single-loop 25 mile race option.

Three loops on the very historic Manassas National Battlefield Park trails.  The Janet that you Ran It with is Janet Choi, and her race is held on National Trails Day each year.

The Old Dominion is the second oldest 100 miler. The course is a mix of road and trail in and around the Massanutten Mountains and Fort Valley.

Half marathon with a 10 km option at Fountainhead Regional Park; another in the Backyard Burn series of races.

Trail 50 miler in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

The latest adventure hosted by MMT and Catoctin RD Kevin Sayers. The 1.5 - 2 mile loop is on the private property of Shepherd’s Spring Outdoor Ministries in Maryland. In addition to the 24 hour race, there are 6 and 12 hour options. 24 hour finishers who complete 100 miles will get a buckle!

The VHTRC's rugged, demanding 100 mile race on the rocky trails in the Massanutten Mountains around Fort Valley.  Entry opens on January 1.

This race takes place on the Tobacco Heritage Trail in southside Virginia, run on a new rail trail scratched out of a former Norfolk Southern Railroad spur line between the towns of Lawrenceville and LaCrosse.  There is a 30k option.

24 hour time limit for this race in the Mohonk Preserve in the Hudson Valley region north of New York City.  There is a relay option in addition to the individual 50 mile race.

This race is held in the beautiful Grayson Highlands State Park in far southwest Virginia.

A unique event, at least for this area, on the trails of the Montgomery County Agricultural Farm Park.  The "challenge" is to complete the 5.18 mile course within an hour for the duration of your race.  The challenges offered are 6 loops/50k and 10 loops/50 miles, with each loop starting at the top of each hour..  The winners are determined by the fastest time for the final loop.  

One of the premier events in the mid-Atlantic. Beautiful trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with only three climbs to negotiate. Third and probably best event in the Lynchburg Ultra Series and the Beast Series, the 2020 race will be the 20th Promise Land.

A flat and fast 100 mile race held on the scenic C&O Canal.

This event is run on the trails out of Camp 5 (Happyland Camp) in Prince William National Park.  The course consists of 6.25-mile loops.

A spring series of 10 mile races. Each race also has a 5 mile option. This race is held on the trails of Pohick Bay Regional Park in southern Fairfax County.

A two-loop course (with a single loop 25k option) on the trails of the Bunker Hill section of Gunpowder State Park, north of Baltimore.

"Expansive vistas overlooking the rugged Hudson Valley, beautiful single track, historic ruins, and a few of the steepest ascents and descents of any trail race in the country." What more can you ask for?  If you asked for a half marathon instead of a full, they offer that option as well.

A dual distance trail race (half marathon, or a 5 km-ish option) that winds through the Michaux State Forest in southern Pennsylvania.  The races are directed by Jen Henry.

2020 race canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

A beautiful, challenging run amongst the bluebells along the rolling Bull Run Trail in Northern Virginia. This will be the 28th year of the VHTRC's premier event. Entry opens on November 15.

A trail race on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, held on a five-mile loop in Calvert Cliffs State Park, with 9 hour or 6 hour format options.

This race is held in the Tuscarora State Forest in Perry County in Pennsylvania, and while it is run on trail and forest service road, it is not run on the Tuscarora Trail.

2020 training run canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic.​

This third event in the Massanutten Training Academy series will cover the final third of the MMT course (from Camp Roosevelt back to Camp Roosevelt).

Run in the same general area as the Promise Land 50k, this event is part of the Lynchburg Ultra and Beast series. Half marathon option is also available.

A late winter tradition. A beautiful trail loop that you do twice. A great first ultra.  All that and much more. Registration opens on the day after Thanksgiving.

A low-key and exceptionally well-marked marathon held on dirt roads and wide trails in Pocahontas State Park, south of Richmond. Flat and fast; there are also half-marathon and marathon relay options. Formerly known as the Instant Classic, this event is now under new race management.

New in 2019 and with a new course among the myriad trails of Prince William Forest Park: the No Man's 50k.  Women's only race, with a two-woman relay team option on the two loop course.

A trail marathon held in the same Umstead State Park in the heart of the North Carolina Triangle as the Umstead 100 miler.

In keeping with tradition, RD Alan Gowen has once again lowered the entry fee for the 2020 race. Online signup opens in early to mid January.

A run on the 27+ mile Wild Oak Recreational Trail, with four loops needed to finish this race. Notoriously tough, and very low key, with a 48 hour time limit.

Why anyone who has completed The Ring would want to do this is anyone's guess. Entry is open only to those in the Fellowship, so the rest of you can breathe a sigh of relief and run Hashawha Hills. Mike Bur and Quatro Hubbard are the "organizers."  Entry opens on January 24th.

Half marathon run on the Dahlgren Rail Heritage trail near Fredericksburg.

This event is in Howard County. 5 loops of a 10km course in Rockburn Branch Park allows for a solo 50km run or a 5-person relay.

The second Massanutten Training Academy run will cover the second third of the MMT 100 mile course, from Signal Knob/Elizabeth Furnace to Camp Roosevelt. Entry for this training event will open Jan 6..

Eight hour run on what are generally flat, runnable horse trails in Lake Anna State Park, located north of Richmond and west of Fredericksburg.  Runners have a choice of an 8-mile loop or a 4.7-mile loop to run each time out. 10 anniversary running in 2018; this is a good introductory event for first-time trail runners.

8 and 20 mile options also available.  Online entry for the lottery opens on November 1st.

Day #1 of the MLK weekend of mountain training runs, this year hosted by Larry Huffman. This is a roughly 50km section of the MMT 100 course along the western ridge of the Massanuttens, starting at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and ending at Signal Knob.  Entry opened on the 18th of December

Two loops on a 15.8 mile course in the Kanawha State Park outside of Charleston.  One loop 25km option is also available.

A 5-loop course, with options to run a single loop (10 km), double loop (half marathon), four loops (marathon) or the full 50 km. Held on the Wachtung Reservation in north-central New Jersey.

Five-loop event on the trails of Prince William Forest Park, with a three-loop 100k option. This new holiday tradition is brought to you by Toni Aurilio and Team Gaylord, so the entertainment and enthusiasm levels will be off the charts.

This race is directed by VHTRC member Tom Simonds, on behalf of the Loudoun Road Runners, to benefit Boulder Crest Retreat and Pets for Vets. Formerly the Loudoun Trail 10k; host site is Camp Highroad in Bluemont, about 20 minutes outside of Leesburg.

The event that proves that there are beautiful trails inside the Beltway. Tentative date for 2019. Entry opens October 1.

Very challenging 100 mile race, with a 100 km option, in the Uwharrie National Forest in central North Carolina. Entry opens on January 1.

Fairly flat and fast marathon and 10 mile races in Medoc Mountain State Park near Raleigh. Registration is on May 15th, and the race historically has filled quickly.

This event has concurrent 50K, 100K and 100 mile solo races, registration for these races opens around mid-March.

A runnable Fat Ass 50km on the easy rolling trails of Prince William Forest Park, directed by the VHTRC's Sarah Curtis.

The Mason District Festival is a multiple distance fundraising event (5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon, 6 hour, 3 hour, and kids fun run) held in a small park in the middle of Fairfax County. Hosted by the VHTRC's Bernard Pesjak.

Formerly a 50 miler and 50k, but in 2016 the 50 miler is gone, replaced with a 30k option. Race on a mix of single track, double track and gravel roads through the Pisgah National Forest area in southwestern North Carolina.

Known as "Pennsylvania's highest trail race" Rock N' the Knob offers a marathon, half marathon and a 10k distance to choose from.

The second of two practice runs on the Women's Half Marathon course, with group leaders and varying training distances available. Focus is generally on the "Do Loop" section. Open to anyone, including men, but entrants in the Women's Half are particularly urged to join us for this fun run, as are non-entrants who know the course.

Last in the CATS summer series of races, another weekday evening event, held on trails near Pen Park, on the northside of Charlottesville.

Out and back run on the Dahlgren Heritage Rail Trail in the Caledon Natural Area near Fredericksburg.  The 3-H Trail Half Marathon is now included as a shorter option at this event.

Flat and fast race in Rosaryville State Park in Maryland.  There are also 10km, 10 mile, and 25km options.

This Fat Ass 100 miler is comprised of four 25-mile laps of this rail-to-trail course.  There is also a 50 mile option.

A weekday evening 5k on the trails of the University of Virginia's Observatory Hill, put on by the CATs.

Day two of the North Face series of races in Bear Mountain State Park. Saturday races are longer, and these Sunday races are the shorter options: half marathon, 10km and 5km.

Series of races utilizing trails in the Algonkian Regional Park, Great Falls Regional Park and also the Potomac Heritage trail.

Saturday distances are 50 miles, 50 km and marathon.  Sunday races will be a half marathon, a 10 km and a 5 km.

Lots of options available to trail runners at this festival in Wakefield Park in Northern Virginia.  6 hour run, 3 hour run, an early 5km and a later 5km are available.

A "Phat Ass Haph Marathon" put on the week before Stone Mill on the Redland Trails in Montgomery County.  Hosted by the Muddy Shoes trail running group from MoCo, there is a 10k option as well.

5 mile race put on by the CATs on the trails of Camp Holiday, south of Charlottesville.

This race takes place on a 5 mile loop at Hat Creek Camps south of Lynchburg.  Start time is at noon, and team competition is available in addition to solo runners. [Race discontinued, 2018]

The "NUTT" Challenge is held on the mountain bike trails of the Western Slope of southern section of the Massanutten Mountains, with the Massanutten Resort. The 50km race consists of 5 laps of a figure-8 route; there are 25km and 5km options.

This is a bike ride on the Skyline Drive, timed to coincide with Joe Clapper's birthday and with the glorious fall foliage of Shenandoah National Park.

The Mt. Penn Mudfest is held in Egleman’s Park & Lake, and is hosted by Reading's Pagoda Pacers club. Lollipop course made up of a 5k uphill "stick", a 5k loop, and a 5k descent back down the stick to the finish.  Took 2018 off; back in 2019(?)

A 50 km that has developed a great reputation, this picturesque race is just across the Virginia border in West Virginia. The 2016 race was canceled.

Night race on a 3.6-mile fire road course at the Warhill Sports Complex in Williamsburg. 8 pm to 8 am race time equals 13 hours - that's right, this race is held around the start of daylight savings time, so you get that extra hour of running time!

After a nine year run, the Virgil Crest Ultras held their last running in 2015.  The races will not be put on in the future.

21km and 10km trail races, both held on a primarily single-track course in and around the James River in downtown Richmond. This is a very challenging course on rolling mountain bike trails. XTERRA opted not to return to Richmond in 2016

Canceled in 2012.

This is not a trail run, but it has traditionally been sponsored by the VHTRC. It is a run of the entire W&OD bike path. This race could return in the future, pending the identification and approval of a new race director.  Contact the VHTRC board if you are interested.

A tour of Mason Neck to see eagles and history with Gary Knipling as our guide. Eagle Run Sunday was one of the defining events of the VHTRC.  The 20th anniversary Eagle Run - and the last - was held on January 23, 2011.  Thanks to Gary for 20 great years, and to everyone for their support over those years.
